Business and family correspondence of seaman from New Haven, Conn., involved mainly in the South American trade; includes an 1849 power of attorney to James Goodrich to act as agent to employ a geologist for the Gordon's California Association, a letter discussing the effect of the Mexican War on the shipping business and a letter from Ephraim G. Squier in 1850.

Ephraim George Squier (1821-1888) and Dr. Edwin Hamilton Davis (1811-1888) of Chillicothe, Ohio were antiquarian authors who became authorities in the field of Indian antiquities.
